This bio contains spoilers for season three! Also, this Alaric is AU now.
Alaric Saltzman grew up in a middle class home, where his father nurtured his love for history. His childhood was normal, and despite a few run-ins with the law, his teenage years were normal, too. He went on to Duke University, where he met Isobel Fleming. While the two didn’t always get along, he loved her more than anything. After finishing his degree, Alaric and Isobel married.
While he worked at the university’s history department, Isobel worked in the paranormal department. Her research into vampires became an obsession; one that he often worried about. One day, after returning from a trip, Alaric witnessed his wife being fed upon by a vampire. The following day, she gave him the Gilbert Ring and told him to wear it for protection. Soon after, Isobel disappeared.
Like with most cases dealing with a missing spouse, Alaric was the main suspect, even though he didn’t know where she was. In his mind, the vampire he’d seen her with was the one who had murdered her, even though there was no body. He took all of her research and started to track the vampire, while learning how to hunt them.
All of his research pointed toward a vampire named Damon Salvatore, which he tracked to Mystic Falls. Shortly after arriving, Alaric found out his wife hadn’t died, but had allowed herself to be turned into a vampire. She compelled him to take away some of the pain he felt, but she didn’t take away all of it. Eventually, he moved on with Jenna Gilbert.
Settling into life in Mystic Falls was easy for him. He worked at the high school as the history teacher, and became friends with Damon Salvatore. Alaric also helped keep the town safe, which was made easier with the Gilbert ring Isobel had given him before her disappearance. And even though he knew he could protect the people around him, he refused to tell Jenna the truth about vampires, and other supernatural beings.
